GETTING TO SILVENSA 2026

Do not just arrive.
Make an entrance.

Bergen is unusually good at making the journey part of the trip. Fly straight in, cross the mountains on one of Europe's great railway journeys, or arrive from Denmark by sea. If you have an extra day, add fjords.

THREE WAYS IN

Pick the journey that matches your level of sensible.

If time matters most, fly. If the journey matters, take the train. If you are coming through Denmark and want Silvensa to begin before you reach Norway, take the ship.

THE EPIC ROUTE

Cross Norway by train.

Vy calls the Bergen Line one of Europe's most spectacular scenic rail journeys. It crosses the Hardangervidda mountain plateau and reaches 1,237 metres above sea level before descending toward Bergen.

FINSE · BERGEN LINE
OSLO S → BERGEN

About seven hours of Norway showing off.

The direct journey normally takes roughly 6½–7½ hours. You leave Oslo, climb through valleys and forests, cross the enormous white expanse of Hardangervidda and eventually descend through the dramatic western landscape toward Bergen.

Winter changes the strategy: Vy notes that daylight on the high plateau is roughly 09:00–15:00 in winter. If the scenery is the point, take a daytime departure.

❄️ NEXT STOP: HOTH

Yes. That Finse.

The train passes Finse, where exterior scenes for the ice planet Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back were filmed around the Hardangerjøkulen glacier. The station sits at 1,222 metres, and the crew stayed at Finse 1222.

🌙 THE NIGHT TRAIN

Sleep across a mountain.

Vy currently offers private Sleeper compartments, six-berth Rest compartments and PlusNight lie-flat privacy seats on the Bergen Line.

You sacrifice most of the winter scenery, but gain a hotel-night-sized dose of railway romance. On a clear night with strong aurora activity, you might get lucky over the plateau. Treat that as a cosmic bonus, not a booking guarantee.

🪟 SEAT NERD INFORMATION

There is no universally correct side.

Vy recommends the left side from Oslo for the best Hardangervidda views, while the right side from Oslo is better for the dramatic western valleys and fjord landscape.

Conclusion: make friends with somebody across the aisle.

THE CINEMATIC ROUTE

Arrive by sea from Denmark.

If you can get yourself to Hirtshals, Fjord Line can turn the final leg into an overnight mini-cruise instead of another airport.

FJORD LINE · HIRTSHALS → BERGEN
DENMARK → NORWAY

Go to sleep at sea. Wake up on the Norwegian coast.

Fjord Line operates the Hirtshals–Stavanger–Bergen route year-round. The full crossing is roughly 17½ hours, with cabins, restaurants and lounges on board.

The route continues north from Stavanger toward Bergen, so the last part of the journey becomes a west-coast arrival rather than an airport transfer.

Holiday warning: Christmas and New Year timetables can vary. Check your exact sailing date before building the rest of Europe around it.

THE EFFICIENT ROUTE

Fly directly to Flesland.

Bergen Airport is the easy answer. Avinor currently lists 18 airlines at BGO and provides a direct-route explorer for nonstop connections.

Find a direct flight

Search Bergen Airport's current direct routes and airline list. Winter schedules are seasonal, so check the actual Silvensa dates rather than assuming a summer route still operates.

BONUS QUESTS

You came all this way. Add a fjord.

If you can spare a day before or after Silvensa, Bergen is one of the easiest places in the world to turn “free day” into “apparently I am now on a UNESCO fjord”.

NORWAY IN A NUTSHELL®
THE CLASSIC FULL-DAY ADVENTURE

Bergen Railway + Nærøyfjord + Flåm Railway.

The famous route combines train, bus and fjord cruise through some of Western Norway's most dramatic landscape: Bergen Railway, Nærøydalen, the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord and the Flåm Railway.

You can travel it in either direction. Oslo → Bergen makes an extraordinary arrival journey before Silvensa; Bergen → Oslo works just as well as a scenic way to leave after the event.

For Silvensa dates, the 2026 Visit Bergen listing shows departures 26–31 December, but not 1 January. That makes it especially interesting for anyone arriving a day or two early.

It is a long day — typically around 12 hours — which is precisely why it becomes a story rather than an excursion.

🚤 HALF DAY · FROM BERGEN

Mostraumen fjord cruise

A winter-friendly option if you do not have a full day. Sail from central Bergen into Osterfjorden and through narrow Mostraumen, then return to town.

Visit Bergen lists winter departures through 31 December; check the exact Silvensa week before booking.

🚞 EXTEND THE TRAIN JOURNEY

Break the trip at Flåm

Instead of travelling Oslo → Bergen in one straight line, leave the Bergen Railway at Myrdal and take the spectacular Flåm Railway down toward the fjord. Stay overnight, cruise the Nærøyfjord, then continue to Bergen.

🧭 BUILD YOUR OWN SIDE QUEST

Visit Bergen has dozens.

Fjord cruises, RIB boats, Flåm, Hardanger, Sognefjord and other day trips leave from or connect easily with Bergen. The important thing is to check winter operation dates.

THE RECOMMENDATION

If you have the time, do not fly both ways.

Fly into Oslo and take the Bergen Line west. Or arrive in Bergen by air and take the train back after Silvensa. Or come through Denmark and sail in.

The point is simple: Bergen is one of those places where getting there can legitimately be part of the holiday.
