BEFORE OR AFTER SILVENSA · YOUR OWN ADVENTURE

You are already in Norway.
That seems worth exploring.

Add a mountain, a fjord, a railway journey or several days along the Arctic coast to your Silvensa trip. We have collected a few good starting points. The adventuring is up to you.

PRE & POST TOURS

Make the journey a little longer.

Whether you have a spare afternoon or two extra weeks, there is a great deal of Norway beyond the hotel lobby. Some of it even has decent weather. Occasionally.

AFTER SILVENSA · WINTER ESCAPE

Voss: ski, sauna, repeat.

Train from Bergen to Voss, a hotel beside the station and a gondola next door. Rent skis, boots and helmet at the top, or simply take the gondola for the view and lunch. Two nights after Silvensa, 1–3 January, make a particularly convenient extension. Confirm lift and rental availability before booking.

BEFORE OR AFTER · THE SCENIC DETOUR

Flåm, Nærøyfjord & Norway in a Nutshell.

Combine trains, dramatic valleys and a fjord cruise into a journey that is very difficult to describe without using the word spectacular. Travel Oslo → Bergen (or reverse) via Flåm, or explore a winter two-day round trip from Bergen. In the two-day version, spend a night in Flåm and enjoy more of the limited winter daylight.

BEFORE OR AFTER · THE RAIL ADVENTURE

Oslo to Bergen, the long way worth taking.

Across Hardangervidda by train, with snowy mountain views and a stop at Finse — familiar to anyone who remembers the ice planet Hoth. In December, choose a daylight departure if you want to see the scenery. Best as part of your journey into or out of Bergen, rather than as a quick day trip.

A FEW HOURS · DEPARTS CENTRAL BERGEN

Mostraumen: the half-day fjord escape.

Take a boat from central Bergen through Osterfjorden and narrow Mostraumen. Mountains, waterfalls and a proper fjord experience without needing another hotel or a week off work.

Best for: a free morning before Silvensa. The published late-2026 timetable includes daily departures through 31 December; check your exact day, especially around New Year.

FOR THE EXTRA ADVENTUROUS

Hurtigruten.
The long way north.

At some point, a quick Norwegian holiday turns into an Arctic expedition. Hurtigruten would like to help with that transition.

BERGEN → LOFOTEN → TROMSØ → KIRKENES

Keep sailing north.

Board in Bergen and sail past islands, fishing villages and snow-capped mountains towards the Arctic. The classic route carries local passengers and cargo as well as visitors — this is a working Norwegian coastal journey, not just a floating hotel.

Expect memorable places such as Trondheim, Bodø, Lofoten, Tromsø and Kirkenes. Winter brings very short days, dramatic light and perhaps the Northern Lights. The aurora is not a contractual obligation of the sky.

🚢 7 days northbound🔁 12 days roundtrip🧭 Short port-to-port trips
Prepare your wallet emotionally. Again.

This is a significant holiday expense, especially with cabins and meals. Prices depend on dates, cabins and booking type. Compare the full northbound sailing with shorter coastal segments.

🌌

Winter is different

Northern Lights may be visible north of the Arctic Circle, but never count on a sighting. Plan for limited daylight and changing coastal weather.

🛳️

Shorter works too

You can choose individual ports instead of seven or twelve days. A short voyage can be a memorable addition without becoming your entire holiday.

🧳

Remember the return trip

Arrange onward transport from your final port and allow sensible connections. Kirkenes is magnificent, but it is not exactly next door to Bergen.

MAKE THE EXTRA TIME COUNT

Three very plausible extensions.

Start with how many days you have. Let the mountains and coastal ships argue over the rest.

01

A free morning.

Take a Mostraumen cruise from Bergen and return in time for your next plans. No extra hotel required.

02

Two extra nights.

Train to Voss after Silvensa for a winter weekend, or spend two days crossing the fjords and Flåm.

03

A whole extra week.

Leave Bergen aboard Hurtigruten and travel the Norwegian coast towards Kirkenes, with the Arctic as your afterparty.

ONE LAST BIT OF ADVICE

Winter is beautiful.
It also has opinions.

Short daylight hours, snow, wind and holiday schedules can affect any of these plans. Check your actual travel dates and connections, allow some flexibility, and bring suitable clothing.

And remember: the Silvensa programme remains in Bergen, 28 December 2026 – 1 January 2027. Any extra adventures are yours to arrange independently.
